Butterfly Click Test

Alternate two fingers on one button for 10 seconds and see how fast butterfly clicking really is for you.

How many times can you click in 10 seconds?

Click or tap the box as fast as you can. The timer starts on your first click.

How butterfly clicking works

Butterfly clicking uses two fingers on the same mouse button, usually the index and middle finger. They take turns, one tapping while the other lifts. Because each finger only has to click half as often, the combined rate can be much higher than one finger alone.

To try it, rest both fingertips on the left button, side by side. Tap them in turn with a light, rolling rhythm, a bit like drumming your fingers on a table. Keep the movements small, since big lifts waste time.

What this test measures

The timer starts with your first click inside the box and runs for 10 seconds. Every left click counts, and the live display shows the time left, your clicks and your live CPS. You finish with your CPS to one decimal, a rating, the total clicks and your personal best, and the 10 second mode keeps its own history in the Your scores panel.

Ten seconds gives the rhythm time to settle. Butterfly clicking often starts messy, with the fingers out of step, and a very short test can catch only that untidy start.

Double click registration

Many mice register some butterfly presses as double clicks. A single press can bounce inside the switch and reach the computer as two clicks. This test counts every click it receives, so double registration can lift your score above what your fingers actually did. If your butterfly score is far higher than you expected, that may be part of the reason.

The same hard use is why fast techniques add wear to switches, and a worn switch is more likely to send unwanted double clicks during everyday use too.

Butterfly clicking and game servers

Because of those extra registered clicks, butterfly clicking is banned on some game servers. Rules differ from one server to the next, so check the rules of any server you play on before you use it there. This test only measures speed. It does not decide whether a technique is allowed anywhere.

Compare your result with the jitter click test, which relies on arm tension instead, or check your mouse with the mouse click test if it has started double clicking on its own. For a PvP style 10 second run, the Kohi click test uses the same timer.

Butterfly Click Test FAQ

Why is butterfly clicking faster than normal clicking?

Two fingers share the work on one button, so each finger only clicks half as often. The combined rate can be much higher than one finger can manage.

Is butterfly clicking allowed in games?

It depends on where you play. It is banned on some game servers because many mice register some presses as double clicks, so check each server's rules.

Does butterfly clicking damage a mouse?

Fast techniques add wear to mouse switches. Over time a worn switch can start double clicking during normal use.
