What you get for free
Everything on this page is free. You do not create an account, you do not enter an email address, and there is no paid version with extra features. Press Start test, type the passage, and the full result appears as soon as you reach the last character.
Some typing tests show a headline number and ask you to register for the detail. This one shows all of it at once, and you can run it as often as you want.
How a run works
A short English passage of about 55 words appears. The clock starts on your first key, so there is no countdown to rush you. Correct characters turn dark and mistakes are highlighted in red. Backspace works, and live WPM and accuracy are shown while you type. The test ends by itself at the last character.
It also works on phones. Tap the passage to open the keyboard.
What the result shows
| Figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| Score | Words per minute multiplied by accuracy |
| Raw WPM | Your speed before mistakes are counted |
| Accuracy | The share of your keystrokes that were correct |
The score is the number to track. Raw WPM tells you how fast your hands moved, and accuracy tells you how much of that speed was lost to errors. A word is counted as five characters, the standard for typing speed, so results stay comparable from one passage to the next.
How your history is stored
Each result is saved in your browser, on the device you are using. Nothing is sent to an account, because there is no account. The Your scores panel lists your recent runs, and the dashboard keeps your results from the other tests on the site in one place.
Two things follow from storing scores this way. Your history stays in that browser and nowhere else. It also does not travel with you, so a run on your phone will not appear on your laptop, and clearing your browser data removes it.
Getting a result you can trust
One run is a snapshot. Take three and look at the average. To find out what the number means, see the score bands on the main typing test page. The WPM test page explains how the figure is calculated.
