Typing Practice Online

Practice typing in your browser on whatever device you have, from a desktop keyboard to a phone.

How many words per minute can you type?

Type the passage exactly as shown. The clock starts on your first key and stops when you reach the end.

Practice wherever there is a browser

Online practice means you can fit a run in wherever you are: at your desk, on a lunch break laptop or on your phone on the bus. Open the page, press Start test and type a passage of about 55 words. Nothing to install, nothing to sign in to. The result shows your score, raw WPM and accuracy, and every finished run is saved to the Your scores panel in that browser.

Keyboard or phone: what changes

The test is the same on every device, but what you are practicing is not.

On a keyboard, online practice is a chance to build touch typing: fingers on A S D F and J K L ;, eyes on the screen. On a phone, the goal is cleaner thumb typing, since you cannot type a phone by feel.

Notes for phone practice

The typing box asks your phone not to autocorrect or capitalize, but some keyboard apps ignore that. If words change by themselves, turn off autocorrect and suggestions in your keyboard settings before you practice. Hold the phone in portrait with both hands for a steadier grip. If the keyboard does not appear, tap the passage again.

Tablets sit in between. With a keyboard attached, treat them like a laptop. Without one, practice as you would on a large phone.

Keep each device separate

Your history is stored in the browser you use, so each device builds its own record. That is useful. A desktop history shows your keyboard progress, and a phone history shows your thumb progress, without one blurring the other. Compare runs only within the same device.

If you want a routine to follow on any device, typing practice sets one out in three runs. The free typing practice page explains how your browser history works day to day.

Typing Practice Online FAQ

Can I practice typing online on my phone?

Yes. Tap the passage to open the on-screen keyboard and type as normal. Phone scores are usually lower than keyboard scores, so keep the two apart when you compare.

Which browser should I use?

Any modern browser works. Use the same one each time, because your score history is saved in that browser only.

Why are my phone and keyboard scores so different?

Thumb typing and finger typing are different skills. A 2019 Aalto University study measured about 36 WPM on smartphones, so a phone score below your keyboard score is normal.
