The human benchmark style of typing test
The classic human benchmark typing test is simple. You are shown a passage, you type it, and you get a number. There are no lessons, levels or settings. One short run gives you a figure that you can compare with your earlier runs and with other people.
The test on this page follows that style.
This site is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to humanbenchmark.com. It is a separate set of free tests with its own passages and its own score bands.
How this version works
- Press Start test. A short English passage of about 55 words appears.
- Start typing. The clock begins on your first key.
- Correct characters turn dark. Mistakes are highlighted in red, and Backspace works.
- Live WPM and accuracy are shown as you type.
- The clock stops when you reach the last character.
The passages contain no apostrophes or quotation marks, which keeps the text easy to type on any keyboard and on phones. On a touchscreen, tap the passage to open the keyboard.
How the score is calculated
The score is WPM multiplied by accuracy. WPM uses the standard five-character word: characters divided by five, divided by minutes. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were correct.
The result screen shows all three figures.
| Figure | Example |
|---|---|
| Raw WPM | 62 |
| Accuracy | 95 percent |
| Score | 59 |
Multiplying by accuracy means you cannot rush your way to a high score. A fast, messy run and a slower, clean run can end on the same number.
What a score means
On this site, 38 to 51 is rated average, 52 to 69 above average, 70 to 89 fast and 90 or more exceptional. About 40 WPM is the commonly quoted adult average.
These bands belong to this site. Other typing tests may use different passages and different rules for errors, so compare your results within one test.
The rest of the benchmark
Typing is one of several tests here. Your results are saved in your browser with no account, and the dashboard shows them together. After typing, try the reaction time test. The full typing guide is on the main typing test page.
