Online Typing Test

Take a typing test online on any device with a browser. There is nothing to install.

How many words per minute can you type?

Type the passage exactly as shown. The clock starts on your first key and stops when you reach the end.

A typing test that runs in the browser

This test is a web page. Open it, press Start test and type. There is no program to download, no extension to add and no account to create.

A passage of about 55 words appears. The clock starts on your first key and stops at the last character. You see live WPM and accuracy while you type, then a score, raw WPM and accuracy at the end.

Which devices work

DeviceHow to startKeep in mind
DesktopPress Start test and typeFull-size keys, the usual reference
LaptopSame as desktopFlatter keys with a shorter press
TabletTap the passage, or attach a keyboardTouch keys give no feedback under the fingers
PhoneTap the passage to open the keyboardThumb typing, so turn off autocorrect

A 2019 Aalto University study measured about 36 WPM on smartphones, and about 38 WPM for people typing with two thumbs. A phone score below your keyboard score is normal. Treat each device as its own scale and compare like with like.

Keyboard layout notes

You type the passage exactly as it is shown, so what matters is that your layout can produce English letters, capitals, commas and full stops. QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ and Dvorak users can all take the test.

The passages contain no apostrophes or quotation marks. Those characters sit in different places on different layouts, and phones often swap them for curly versions, so leaving them out avoids errors that have nothing to do with your typing.

If your keyboard is set to an input method for another script, switch to a Latin layout before you start.

Things an online test cannot control

Your result depends on your device as well as your hands. A few checks help.

  • Close heavy tabs and programs so the page responds without lag.
  • Turn off autocorrect and text prediction on touch devices.
  • Use the same device and browser when you compare results over time.

Your scores stay in the browser

Results are saved on the device and listed in the Your scores panel. They do not sync between devices, so a phone and a laptop each keep their own history.

For the scoring details see the main typing test page. To see how your number compares with other people, read about the average typing speed.

Online Typing Test FAQ

Do I need to download anything to take the typing test online?

No. The test runs in the browser on this page. There is no app, no plugin and no account.

Can I take the online typing test on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap the passage to open the on-screen keyboard and type as normal. Turn off autocorrect if it keeps changing words, because every character is checked exactly.

Does the test work with Dvorak or non-US keyboard layouts?

Yes, as long as your layout can type English letters and basic punctuation. The passages have no apostrophes or quotation marks, which are the characters that tend to differ between layouts.
