A race for quick typists
This is the fast version of the typing race. The text is the same kind of passage, about 55 words, but the opponents are much quicker: the Quick car at 50 WPM, the Racer at 70 WPM and the Champion at 90 WPM. On this site, 70 to 89 WPM is rated fast and 90 or more is exceptional, so taking 1st place here is a real achievement.
What each car demands
With a passage of about 55 words, simple division gives a rough finish time for each car. The Quick car needs a little over a minute. The Racer needs about 47 seconds. The Champion crosses the line in about 37 seconds. To beat a car, you have to finish the whole passage, mistakes and fixes included, before it does.
Your WPM is timed from Go, so a slow first word counts against you. Have your fingers on the home row during the countdown.
Pushing speed without losing accuracy
At these speeds, errors decide most races. A single wrong key stops your car while the Champion keeps moving. Some habits that help:
- Warm up with two or three races on the standard typing games page before you take on these cars.
- Hold a steady rhythm. Even keystrokes are easier to keep clean than bursts.
- Keep your eyes a word ahead so your fingers never wait for the next word.
- Fix a red letter the moment you see it, before more characters pile up after it.
- Check accuracy on every result. If it falls below about 95 percent, ease off for a few races.
Fast typists in the large 2018 Aalto University and University of Cambridge study made fewer errors, not more. They also used rollover typing, pressing the next key before releasing the last one.
If the cars are too quick
If you rarely beat even the Quick car, drop back to the standard race, where cars drive at 25, 40 and 55 WPM, and come back once you win there. For a closer look at how your speed is measured, and how it compares with a scored test, read speed typing games.
