A slow race made for young typists
In this version of the typing race, the opponents are a Turtle, a Bicycle and a Scooter. They drive at 10, 16 and 22 words per minute, which gives a beginner a real chance to win. Instead of a long passage, your child types two short, simple sentences, so each race is over quickly.
The rules are the same as the main race. Press Start race, count down from 3, and type. The car in the top lane belongs to your child and moves forward with each correct letter. If a letter is wrong, the car waits until it is fixed with Backspace. At the end, the game shows a place from 1st to 4th, words per minute and accuracy.
Why kids like it
Children can see their progress on the screen without reading a number. Their car either passes the Turtle or it does not. That makes the goal simple and the reward instant. Because a mistake stops the car, kids learn quickly that looking for the right key matters more than bashing keys fast.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Sit the child so their feet rest flat on the floor or a box, with the screen roughly at eye level.
- Keep wrists relaxed and off the edge of the desk while typing.
- Keep sessions short, a handful of races, then something else.
- Praise a high accuracy figure as much as a 1st place.
- Let the child fix their own mistakes rather than pointing at the key.
- Introduce the home row early, with fingers resting on A S D F and J K L.
When to move on
Once your child beats the Scooter most of the time with good accuracy, they are ready for something longer. The typing practice for kids page has calm drills for building skill between races, and the standard typing games race starts with an Easy car at 25 WPM, only a little quicker than the Scooter.
