Typing Practice Games

Type the passage to move your car and try to beat three computer cars that drive at steady speeds.

  1. You
  2. Easy car25 WPM
  3. Medium car40 WPM
  4. Fast car55 WPM

Race the cars by typing.

Your car moves forward with every correct letter. Fix mistakes to keep going. First to the end of the text wins.

Practice that feels like a game

Typing drills can feel like homework. A race gives each run a goal you can see: three cars on the track and a finish line. Press Start race, wait for the 3 2 1 countdown, then type the passage of about 55 words. Your car moves forward with each correct letter. Make a mistake and your car stops until you fix it with Backspace, so sloppy typing loses races.

When you cross the line, you see your place from 1st to 4th, your WPM and your accuracy. It works on phones too. Tap the text to open the keyboard.

The three cars are pacers

The computer cars do not speed up or slow down. Each one drives at the same fixed speed every race, which makes them useful as pacers.

CarSpeedWhat beating it tells you
Easy car25 WPMYou are past the beginner band on this site
Medium car40 WPMYou type faster than the commonly quoted adult average
Fast car55 WPMYou are above the 52 WPM average found in a large 2018 study

Because the speeds never change, your place is a fair comparison from one day to the next. Finishing ahead of a car you used to lose to is real progress.

Move up step by step

Start where you can win some races, then raise the bar.

  • Kids and new typists. A kids version swaps the cars for slow opponents, a Turtle at 10, a Bicycle at 16 and a Scooter at 22 WPM, with two short sentences instead of a passage. Find it on typing games for kids.
  • This race. Aim first to beat the easy car every time, then the medium car, then the fast car.
  • Faster cars. A fast version sets the cars at 50, 70 and 90 WPM for typists who win here every time.

Mix racing with tracked practice

The race is good for motivation, but it does not keep a history. Alternate it with the typing test, which saves every score in your browser so you can see your average rise. For more ways to make practice fun, see typing games.

Typing Practice Games FAQ

How does the typing race work?

Press Start race, wait for the 3 2 1 countdown and type the text. Your car moves with each correct letter, and a mistake stops it until you fix it with Backspace.

How fast are the computer cars?

They drive at fixed speeds of 25, 40 and 55 WPM. To finish first you need to keep a pace above 55 WPM over the whole passage, including the time spent fixing mistakes.

Are race results saved?

No. When you finish you see your place, WPM and accuracy, but the race keeps no history. Use the typing test if you want to track scores over time.
